Diverse Workforce

Globalization has increased cultural diversity in the workplace. With a variety of employees with different cultures, races and ethnic backgrounds, companies must implement new policies and guidelines for workers to follow. Religious differences must be acknowledged and accepted, this includes cultural traditions, clothing preference, national holidays, language barriers, etc. This causes a need for more employee training in order to protect minorities from discrimination and insensitive jokes and comments.

Making a complaint process available and understandable is important so employees can file a workplace related complaint if necessary. These training exercises, policies and guidelines are useful and necessary  but have positive and negative outcomes. Many employees see this as a learning curve and benefit from the knowledge learned and begin to appreciate other cultures. There are also those who are irritated and prefer a less culturally diverse company. By recognizing opposition of diversification a company can then take the time to explain how this will benefit the employees and company in the future. This change is difficult for everyone but with proper leadership, clear rules and regulations, and goals a company can benefit greatly from diversity and not only increase knowledge but also sales.
